Youth Hub site announced for the northern suburbs

Federal Labor is supporting the Top End’s youth, committing $5 million dollars for a purpose-built youth hub in the northern suburbs.

This is the fulfilment of an election commitment to provide a safe place for young people to connect with the support they need.

“The Federal Labor Government knows that we need to help our young people to be the best that they can be,” said Member for Solomon Luke Gosling.

“We’ve heard the concerns of Territorians, which is why I was so pleased to secure this funding commitment during the election.

“We want to provide a safe space with trusted adults, giving young people the opportunity to develop life skills, to build resilience and to access support services if they need them.

“Having a destination that creates a sense of belonging has been shown to increase positive connections and to alleviate the conditions that lead to boredom and anti-social behaviour in young people.”

Following a detailed assessment by the NT Government, the preferred site has been named as the old fire station at Casuarina.

A new fit-for-purpose facility will be built that is close to public transport, and easy for young people to access – bringing the youth hub to young people where they are.

The project will build on the successful youth hub model already operating in Palmerston which is based on partnerships between the Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities, the City of Palmerston, and non-government service providers.

The NT Government will provide ongoing funding to operate the hub.

Public consultation will be undertaken during December 2022 and January 2023 to inform design of the building, and the activities and support programs.

“Territory Labor is absolutely committed to ensuring the Territory’s next generation have the best opportunities available to them to contribute to a better society for us all,” said Youth Minister Lauren Moss.

“We’ve been without a dedicated facility since the closure early last year of The Shak, not far from this new location.

“The Palmerston model has shown us how we can support our young people while also benefiting the local community, and it’s a model we’ll apply to this new facility.”
