Media Release - Labor will restore beautiful urban waterways across Darwin and Palmerston

29 April 2022

An Albanese Labor Government will invest in creek and catchment restoration projects across Darwin and Palmerston.

The $3.82 million commitment is part of Labor’s $200 million Urban Rivers and Catchments Program, and will go towards key restoration projects to improve the health and amenity of urban waterways including Rapid Creek, Ludmilla Creek, Sandy Creek, and Mitchell Creek Catchment.

This funding will support the work of City of Darwin and local land care groups and Larrakia Rangers.

Funded activities include revegetation, improvements in water quality, weed and invasive species management, the establishment of gross pollutant traps, native plantings, landscape rehydration and soil erosion mitigation works, and other activities.

The program will engage community members, create jobs, and improve the quality and amenity of local waterways for all Territorians to enjoy.

Labor’s urban rivers and catchments investment will fund projects across the country to restore urban river systems, catchments, and wetlands.

Fixing up waterways and their surrounding catchment areas will improve water quality, help improve habitat for animals, and deliver positive outcomes for nature and communities.

There is broad community support and involvement for these projects including from the City of Darwin, Ludmilla Landcare Group, Friends of Mitchell Creek Catchment, and Casuarina Coastal Reserve Landcare Group.

Only a Labor Government will restore the health of Australia’s urban rivers and catchments in Darwin and Palmerston, where we celebrate the value of our stunning natural landscapes within our flourishing cities.
