Media Release - Almost $1m awarded to Charles Darwin University researchers

26 August 2022

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has announced more than $29 million for 61 grants for Linkage Projects across Australia over the next five years, with Charles Darwin University to receive $935,882.

The grant will fund a project focusing on transdisciplinary cultural and natural resource management and workforce development research in the Arnhem Plateau.

Member for Solomon Luke Gosling said the grant for CDU would help create new knowledge working with First Nations communities.

“This is great news for the Territory,” Mr Gosling said.

“Linkage Projects promote national and international research partnerships between researchers and business, industry, community organisations and other publicly funded research agencies.

“I’m delighted that local researchers and innovators have been recognised and rewarded with these grants.”

Member for Lingiari Marion Scrymgour said the project aimed to recognise and build on cultural knowledge; wildfire, feral animal, and invasive plant management; mine-site rehabilitation; climate change mitigation; and improve the effectiveness of Indigenous training.

“This project has the potential to create lasting economic, social and environmental benefits,” she said.

“It will provide opportunities for Indigenous people to transmit their immense cultural and environmental knowledge to younger generations and collaborate with researchers to develop businesses and jobs.

“The ground-breaking work Linkage Projects are doing has the potential to deliver industrial and commercial applications that benefit people and communities locally, nationally, and internationally.

“It’s so exciting to witness the Government supporting innovation in the Territory.”

The Linkage Projects across Australia will also receive an additional $59 million in cash and in-kind support from more than 200 partner organisations.
