In May 2017 the Northern Territory Government and the Federal Government signed an MOU for a City Deal for Darwin. It’s now been one year since the MOU was signed and we’re still waiting.
Townsville’s City Deal was signed after just one month. Launceston’s City Deal was signed in seven months.
The Minister for Urban Cities and Infrastructure parades the eighteen months it took for the Western Sydney City Deal to be signed, but the Minister knows this is hardly a fair comparison.
Western Sydney involved negotiations between eight separate local governments, in addition to the NSW Government. Darwin’s negotiations involve just three parties in total. The NT Government and City of Darwin both have detailed plans and committed funds ready to go.
So please cut the spin Minister, and sign the Deal.
