Today’s Federal Government announcement of 12 months of GST funding, and 5 years of Indigenous Housing contribution, is a step forward.
We have previously said that the two year funding model that the Turnbull Government previously proposed was never feasible.
Five years of funding is an advance, but the NT Government, with a much smaller funding base, has already provided more.
The bottom line is that overall the Turnbull Government is continuing with cuts to services and facilities throughout the NT.
Territorians deserve and should get equal access to services, in line with all other Australians.
In the case of remote communities, sufficient housing allows Indigenous people to get better health, education and employment. Funds for adequate housing now means less is likely to be required for government services later.
There is also an urgent need for the Turnbull Government to fund its share of implementing the outcomes of the recent Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children.
It’s time the Federal Government truly met it national responsibility for housing and other services to Indigenous people. The gap will not be closed while the Turnbull government continues with its cuts.
