Despite making a number of flashy announcements, after almost three and a half years the Federal Government’s Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) has only given $5 million in funding to one project in far west Western Australia.
This was confirmed during Senate Estimates this week by Laurie Walker, CEO of the NAIF, who when asked how much funding has been given to NAIF projects said, “I think it’s about $5 million.”
No other project has received a cent and more has been spent on NAIF CEO, Board and staff salaries than has been invested in projects.
The Federal Member for Solomon, Luke Gosling, said he was disgusted with the Government’s lack of urgency to get critical Federal Government infrastructure investment dollars flowing.
“Territory businesses are suffering from the economic downturn and they’re screaming out for Federal infrastructure investment. Yet after three years, the Northern Territory has not received a single cent from the NAIF,” said Mr Gosling.
During the Senate Estimates hearings it was revealed that almost $2 million has been spent on expensive consultant fees.
“The NAIF has spent millions more on executive salaries, travel costs and consultants in Sydney and Melbourne than it has on projects in the Territory,” said Mr Gosling.
Mr Gosling said, “The NAIF is the most constipated organisation this divided, arrogant Government has ever set up.”
“NAIF, the Darwin City Deal, NT BoM job cuts, GST, education and health cuts. The Federal Government is paralysed because they’re focused on fighting each other – not on delivering jobs for the Territory and Northern Australia like they should be,” said Mr Gosling.
