Since 2013, the Abbott /Turnbull governments have cut at least 439 Commonwealth Public Service jobs out of Darwin.
This is completely outrageous and damaging to our economy.
These job cuts show a complete lack of understanding of our challenges and complete disregard for the Developing the North agenda.
I call on Barnaby Joyce, as the new Minister for Northern Australia, to start reversing these cuts.
The Minister can also start getting the North Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) to work. The NAIF has $5 billion to build much needed infrastructure in Northern Australia. However, the NAIF is yet to spend a single dollar in the NT. This just isn’t good enough.
I called on the previous Minister, Senator Canavan, and now call on Mr Joyce to permanently base a representative of the NAIF here in Darwin, co-located with the Office of Northern Australia, on the Esplanade.
Recently Mr. Joyce has moved a whole Commonwealth agency to his own electorate. He clearly sees the importance of the public service and its role in regional development.
The very least Mr. Joyce could do is start advocating for the reversal of damaging APS job cuts that are crippling Australia’s northern capital. We need jobs, not cuts.
These job cuts are a clear contradiction of the Turnbull Government’s own decentralization policy that has seen Mr. Joyce successfully move the APVMA to his own electorate.
I am calling on the Turnbull Government and will be calling on the Prime Minister in person as well as the new Minister for Northern Australia, Barnaby Joyce, to stop neglecting the Top End and to start investing in Australia’s economic future by investing in the Northern Capital – Darwin and the Northern Territory.
