I am very concerned about ABC News reports that Defence is still using firefighting foam with traces of PFAS chemicals at RAAF Base Darwin.
The Turnbull Government must be honest and transparent as it carries out current investigations into possible PFAS contamination in the area surrounding RAAF Darwin and Darwin International Airport.
I understand Defence still has not contacted many people who use the surrounding waters and waterways and this is disappointing and frustrating, especially with the latest development. The PFAS investigation process needs to be fast tracked and local people must be adequately informed.
The question is why is Defence not using safer fire retardants without the PFAS risk at RAAF Darwin – a shared civilian facility – as it now does at other sites?
